Our Story

Rooted in Legacy, Built for This Moment.

The Virginia Coalition of Black Voters is a statewide organization rooted in the enduring tradition of grassroots political organizing, civic engagement, and advocacy. We are a distinct, fully independent organization with a mandate that spans the entire Commonwealth of Virginia.

Our foundation grew from a clear and urgent need to strengthen the collective voice of Black voters across Virginia. In a changing political landscape, we recognized that fragmented efforts were no longer enough. To protect our communities, advocate for our families, and help shape our future, we needed a strong statewide organization focused on building and mobilizing the collective power of the Black vote.

We are not a single-issue organization. We are a holistic advocacy group standing firmly on four pillars: Voter Registration, Voter Education, Voter Advocacy, and Voter Mobilization. Our reach extends across Virginia, connecting communities throughout Central Virginia, Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley, Southside, and beyond. Wherever you live in the Commonwealth, our goal is to ensure that Black voters have a voice, a platform, and a political home.

The Virginia Coalition of Black Voters was built to amplify the voices, concerns, and priorities of Black voters and families across Virginia. We are committed to turning those voices into meaningful civic participation, stronger representation, and lasting change throughout the Commonwealth.

Our Core Values

Guided by Principle. Driven by Purpose.

01.

Collective Power & Cohesion

We believe the Black vote and Black communities are strongest not when we are scattered, but when we are strategically united in purpose, goals, and objectives. We prioritize building a cohesive, well-organized voting bloc that transcends individual interests, geographic boundaries, and any partisan labels. We speak with one voice because we know that true power is the result of collective efforts, both harnessed and deployed with precision for maximum community and political impact.

02.

Unwavering Accountability

We do not offer blind loyalty to any party, personality, or political machine.  Our loyalty is exclusively to and for the interests of Black voters and Black families in Virginia.  We will celebrate political allies when they deliver but will unflinchingly demand answers and quick course corrections from elected officials — regardless of party affiliation — who fail to prioritize the needs of Black voters and Black families.  Promises are noted, but very tangible results are what we measure.

03.

Generational Bridge-Building

We stand squarely on the shoulders of our elders who risked everything for the sacred right to vote freely. We also know a much brighter future DEMANDS the energy and fresh visions of a new generation of young activists. We are committed to being a multi-generational movement where the wisdom of decades-long experiences comfortably melds with the innovation of youth, thereby ensuring a seamless transfer of knowledge, strategy, and future leadership.

04.

The Sanctity of Self-Determination

We are not a subsidiary of any other organization. While we honor our historical connections to so many who have advocated in the past, we are an independent, self-governing body charting our own path, working for a modern Virginia. We believe Black voters and Black families must purposefully determine our own agendas, speak for ourselves, and build our own institutions composed of lasting, multi-generational leadership.

05.

Political Integrity & Truth

In an era of misinformation and political spin, we are a trusted, consistent source of truth for Black voters and Black families. Our Voter Education is fact-based and unbiased. Our Direct Advocacy is transparent and inclusive. We will never lie to our community to serve any political agendas, and we will actively combat the forces that attempt to disenfranchise us through deception.

06.

Radical Inclusivity Within Our Community

Black voters and Black communities are not monolithic, and our organization will not treat them as such. We are a big-tent movement that intentionally makes room for the full diversity of Black thought, faith, socioeconomic status, and lived experiences. A welder in Norfolk, a teacher in Danville, a student at Virginia State, Virginia Union, or Hampton all have equal seats at our table. Our strength lies in the ability to find common ground for a shared liberation that spans the Commonwealth of Virginia.
